This week we bring your attention to a recent review that summarizes all the clinical evidence available on the numerous health benefits of olive oil. Olive oil, particularly extra virgin olive oil, has been associated with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, improved endothelial function and lipid profile, prevention of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative disorders, and gut microbiota modulation. In this respect, this review is one of the first to analyze the favorable impact of olive oil consumption on cognitive function and neuroprotection, as well as gut microbiota diversity, either alone or in the context of a Mediterranean Diet.
The next featured article is a study from the Predimed Plus trial that sought to identify environmental and lifestyle factors that could reduce telomere shortening. Telomere length reduction is associated with aging and has been linked to chronic disease and increased risk of disease-related mortality. In this study, researchers demonstrated an increase in telomere length in women, after following a 3-year intervention consisting of an energy-reduced Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil and physical activity.
