Algiers– Algeria is poised to start developing its exportations of high-end olive products on the international market. The collaboration of local institutions, producer organisations and, above all, olive producers, is essential in achieving a greater national presence on that market, establishing research centres and gaining the support of the International Olive Council (IOC). This is the main objective of the request for collaboration made to the IOC by the Algerian authorities at the Med Mag Oliva 2018 trade fair, which specialises in olive growing and was inaugurated by the IOC Executive Director Abdellatif Ghedira (pictured). The olive sector strategy that Algeria has shared with the IOC is structured around four elements: achieving IOC recognition of physico-chemical and organoleptic testing laboratories; creating a group of chemical experts with the technical and regulatory support of the IOC; organising an international symposium in Algeria on current issues in the olive and phytosanitary sectors, and sharing technical and scientific information through collaboration with the IOC Observatory. Algeria’s objective is to improve the positioning of its olive products on the international market by strengthening activities to monitor and contain plant diseases and bacteria, promoting good practices in agriculture, making a more rational use of phytosanitary products, and strengthening its scientific research. On visiting the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management of Algiers (ESHRA) and the Technical Institute of Orchards and Vineyards (ITAFV), the IOC Executive Director observed that “Algeria has made important investments in this regard, as in the area of training”. He also pledged the IOC’s full support of Algeria in its new strategy for the development of the olive sector.
