Sector Statistics – January 2025

MADRID, SPAIN / 30.01.2025

Welcome to the IOC, the only intergovernmental organisation in the world to bring together all the stakeholders involved in the production and consumption of olive oil and table olives.

Here you’ll find an overview of the latest sector statistics, including an update on olive oil prices, trends in international trade in olive oil and table olives, and producer prices for olive oil.

Follow us and visit our website to stay up to date with the latest data! Don’t hesitate to send us an e-mail if you have any questions (iooc@internationaloliveoil.org).

EVOLUTION OF OLIVE OIL AND TABLE OLIVE CONSUMPTION

For the 2024/25 crop year, global olive oil consumption is expected to recover, exceeding 3 million tonnes. Table olive consumption could also reach similar figures.

Olive Oil – Provisional 2023/24 and Estimated 2024/25 Crop Years

According to official data and estimates of the IOC’s Executive Secretariat, global olive oil consumption could reach 3,064,500 tonnes in the 2024/25 crop year, representing a 10.0% increase compared to the previous crop year (2023/24).

In the 2023/24 crop year, although data is still provisional, global consumption is estimated at 2,780,000 tonnes, reflecting a 2.6% decrease (75,000 tonnes less) compared to the previous crop year.

Graph 1 – Distribution of global olive oil consumption 2024/25

Olive oil consumption in the European Union has experienced a downward trend in recent years. Although global consumption has nearly doubled since the 1990/91 crop year, the EU has reduced its share of total consumption, dropping from over 70% in 2004/05 to around 45% in recent crop years. This decline has been offset by increased consumption in non-IOC member countries as well as in other IOC member countries.

Table Olives – Provisional 2023/24 and Estimated 2024/25 Crop Years

The increase in table olive consumption has been particularly notable in major IOC member producing countries. Some countries have recorded significant increases in production and, consequently, in consumption. Notable examples include:

  • Egypt: from 11,000 tonnes in 1990/91 to 520,000 tonnes in 2023/24.
  • Algeria: from 14,000 tonnes to 285,000 tonnes over the same period.
  • Türkiye: from 110,000 tonnes to 350,000 tonnes.

Consumption is estimated at 2.9 million tonnes in the 2023/24 crop year and 3 million tonnes in the 2024/25 crop year.

HARMONIZED CONSUMER PRICE INDEX (EU-27)

The Harmonized Consumer Price Index for olive oil in the EU (HCPI) increased by 1.5% in December compared to the same month of the previous year, although this figure was lower than that recorded in November (-4.2%). The index has been declining since April 2024.
