World market of olive oil and table olives – Data from October 2024

Market situation

Initial data show a 9.7% increase in table olive imports by the main importing countries between September 2023 and August 2024.

Five markets account for around 67% of global table olive imports: the United States (24%), Brazil (18%), the European Union (EU; 17%), Canada (5%) and Australia (3%).

Imports of table olives from the main importing countries rose by 9.7% in the 2023/24 crop year (September 2023 – August 2024) compared with the same period in the previous crop year.

The main partner countries for these markets are Spain, Argentina, Morocco, Greece and Türkiye.

As far as imports from outside the EU are concerned, during the 2023/24 crop year, an estimated 151,633 tonnes of table olives were imported, with a value of 336.8 million euros (+41.2% and +48.6% respectively compared to the previous crop year). Morocco, Türkiye, Egypt and Albania are the main partner countries.

The United States imports more than 150,000 tonnes on average per crop year. The country’s main suppliers of table olives are Spain (39%), Greece (25%) and Morocco (10%).

Brazil imports an average of around 125,000 tonnes, mainly from Argentina (49%), Peru (21%) and Egypt (21%).

As far as producer prices for extra virgin olive oil are concerned, the latest figures for the second week of October for Jaén (Spain) put them at €732 per 100kg, 18.9% down on mid-January, when they peaked at €902.5. In the case of Bari (Italy), the figure is €915 per 100 kg (-5.5%).

In August of the 2023/24 crop year, extra-Community olive oil exports from the EU had a unit value of €915 per 100 kg (+31.8% on the same period of the previous crop year, or -3.7% on the previous month).

The export unit values index fell for the fifth consecutive month compared with the same month last year. In August, it had fallen by 3.8% compared with July.

Olive oil imports by the main importing countries shown in the table below increased by 1.4% between October 2023 and August 2024 compared with the same period in the 2022/23 crop year.

The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) for olive oil in the EU rose by 21.8% in September compared to the same month last year, less than in August (-1.1%). This index has been falling since April 2024.

By country, the biggest increases were in Bulgaria and Estonia.
