The International Olive Council (IOC) welcomed Iraq’s renewed commitment to joining the global olive sector community during a meeting held on Tuesday 21 January at the Organisation’s headquarters in Madrid. The IOC Executive Director, Jaime Lillo met with His Excellency Mr Salih Husain Ali, Ambassador of Iraq to Spain, to discuss Iraq’s reengagement with the IOC. Ambassador Husain Ali presented Director Lillo with a Note Verbale officially expressing his country’s intention to adhere anew to the International Agreement on Olive Oil and Table Olives, 2015.
This meeting comes as a significant step following Iraq’s recent announcement of its intention to rejoin the IOC, aligning with its efforts to strengthen the country’s position in the international olive oil and table olive markets. Iraq, with its rich agricultural heritage and a growing olive sector, has the potential to contribute to the global olive community. Its existing olive groves and emerging production capabilities reflect the country’s dedication to revitalising the olive sector.
This marks a pivotal moment for Iraq, signalling a robust commitment to fostering sustainable practices, aligning with international standards, and promoting the benefits of olive oil and table olives on a global scale.
