The International Olive Council (IOC) will organise a specialised workshop entitled Protected Designations of Origin and Protected Geographical Indications: Experiences and Tools on 11 June 2026 at IOC headquarters in Madrid.
Spearheaded by the Economic Affairs and Promotion Unit, the event will take place from 10:00 to 13:20 (Madrid time) and will be open free of charge to all interested participants, with the possibility to attend either in person, subject to availability, or online via videoconference. Simultaneous interpretation will be available in English, French and Spanish.
The workshop will explore the role of Protected Designations of Origin (PDOs) and Protected Geographical Indications (PGIs) in the olive oil sector, and the Executive Secretariat will present the work it is carrying out regarding the collection and structure of GIs. The discussion will examine how these schemes contribute to quality assurance, product differentiation, market development and the promotion of local know-how and traditions. Discussions will also address governance models, certification systems, legal protection, reliable production standards, market recognition and future opportunities for enhanced international cooperation and IOC activities in this field.
Bringing together experts and representatives from several olive-producing countries, the programme will present international experiences and perspectives from Spain, Morocco, Argentina and Greece. Discussions will address topics including governance models, certification systems, legal frameworks, quality standards, innovation and future opportunities for origin-certified olive products.
Among the confirmed speakers are:
- José Manuel Bajo Prados, expert from the Secretary General of the Baena Designation of Origin, Spain
- Abderraouf Elantri, expert from the National Institute of Agronomic Research, Regional Centre for Agricultural Research in Marrakech, Morocco
