The newsletter of the University of Navarra and the IOC dedicated to health

Article 1

Understanding the biological mechanisms through which the Mediterranean dietary pattern exerts its protective effects remains a central goal in preventive medicine. To investigate these pathways, a recent randomized controlled trial evaluated the combined effects of a Mediterranean diet rich in extra virgin olive oil and physical activity on gut microbiota composition and faecal metabolites. The findings showed favourable changes in microbial composition and short-chain fatty acid production, alongside reductions in inflammatory markers. These results suggest that adopting a Mediterranean dietary pattern combined with physical activity may influence the gut ecosystem and contribute to improved metabolic health.

Building on the potential metabolic and anti-inflammatory benefits of this dietary pattern, dietary interventions may also have clinical relevance in populations experiencing increased oxidative stress. In this context, a clinical study investigated the effects of an energy-restricted Mediterranean diet on adiposity and oxidative stress markers among overweight and obese breast cancer survivors. The intervention was associated with significant reductions in body fat percentage and improvements in antioxidant status. These findings suggest that an energy-restricted Mediterranean diet may help improve body composition and antioxidant status during post-cancer recovery, although the specific contribution of extra virgin olive oil requires further investigation.

Finally, translating potential clinical benefits into real-world public health outcomes depends partly on effective community implementation. To explore this, a quasi-experimental study evaluated a community-based nutritional programme designed to improve adherence to the Mediterranean diet among older adults living in rural areas. The intervention led to statistically significant increases in adherence scores, particularly in relation to daily extra virgin olive oil intake and vegetable consumption. These findings highlight the potential of structured primary care interventions to promote healthier dietary habits among older adults, although further research is needed to establish their long-term effectiveness and scalability.

Article 2

Olive oil continues to attract substantial research interest across a broad range of health- and nutrition-related fields. Recent studies have examined not only its potential health effects but also consumer perceptions of its properties and its role within healthy dietary patterns. In this issue, we highlight three recent studies that offer new perspectives on olive oil, with particular emphasis on extra virgin olive oil (EVOO).

A systematic review analysed 12 studies investigating the potential of olive oil to reduce gingival inflammation and plaque accumulation. The interventions included oil pulling, mouthwashes, toothpastes, and ozonated olive oil preparations, and generally resulted in short-term improvements in gingival health parameters. Among the interventions assessed, ozonated olive oil appeared to produce the most favourable outcomes, with some studies reporting effects comparable to those of chlorhexidine. Although these findings are promising, the authors emphasize the need for higher-quality clinical studies based on standardized methodologies and longer follow-up periods before recommendations regarding its use can be established.

From a consumer perspective, a study of 516 Italian consumers examined perceptions of the health benefits and quality characteristics of EVOO. Although participants generally recognized the importance of its antioxidant content and unsaturated fatty acids, some perceptions were not consistent with scientifically established quality criteria. For example, 41% of participants associated sweetness with higher EVOO quality. Moreover, participants who reported greater knowledge of its health properties were less likely to regard sweetness as an indicator of quality. These findings underscore the importance of strengthening sensory education and developing clear, science-based communication strategies to improve consumers’ understanding of EVOO characteristics.

The NUTRI_ACTIVE study evaluated 169 physically active adults and athletes, focusing on adherence to the Mediterranean diet, a dietary pattern in which olive oil plays a central role. Greater adherence was associated with higher nutrition knowledge (p = 0.002). However, participants with higher training levels frequently exhibited low or suboptimal energy availability. These findings highlight that, even within the context of a healthy dietary pattern such as the Mediterranean diet, nutritional strategies should be tailored to the specific needs of different populations and should ensure adequate energy availability.

Overall, these studies provide new insights into olive oil from diverse perspectives, including oral health, EVOO properties and consumer perceptions, and its role within healthy dietary patterns. Although the findings should be interpreted in light of the characteristics and limitations of each study, they contribute to the growing body of scientific evidence on the potential benefits of olive oil and help identify priorities for future research.
