This week on the Olive Health Information System website

The newsletter of the University of Navarra and the IOC dedicated to health

There is growing evidence supporting the Mediterranean diet as an effective nutritional strategy for preventing and managing obesity across various stages of life. These benefits may be attributed to its distinctive nutritional composition and anti-inflammatory properties. This dietary pattern emphasizes the consumption of whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables, which are rich in fiber and polyphenols and generally have a low glycemic load. Olive oil is rich in polyphenols and is the primary source of cardioprotective monounsaturated fatty acids. Together, these components may contribute to improved metabolic regulation and immune function.

Among pediatric and adolescent populations with overweight or obesity, evidence from randomized controlled trials suggests that interventions based on this dietary pattern can lead to measurable improvements in several health outcomes. This week, the newsletter presents studies focusing on the effects of the Mediterranean diet and its components on obesity and idiopathic inflammatory myopathies.

A meta-analysis comprising five trials with 330 young individuals over an average duration of twelve weeks found that adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with a statistically significant reduction in body mass index and systolic blood pressure compared with control groups. However, no significant changes were observed in diastolic blood pressure, lipid profile, or glycaemic and insulinaemic parameters.

Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies are a group of autoimmune diseases characterized by inflammation and an imbalance between pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines. A cross-sectional study evaluated the association between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and IIM in 859 participants from the Collating the Voice of People with Autoimmune Diseases dataset.

The findings showed that greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with better physical functioning and overall physical health, as well as lower disease activity, fatigue, and pain. These results suggest that components of the Mediterranean diet may influence systemic inflammation, enhance endothelial function, and modulate mitochondrial metabolic pathways.

Despite these promising results, the findings should be interpreted with caution given the small sample sizes and the observational or experimental designs of the studies. Well-designed randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm the role of the Mediterranean diet and to determine whether its individual components exert synergistic effects in these conditions.
