THOC keeps Greece closer to IOC

Madrid / 03.08.2021
ELGO-DIMITRA PRESENTS THE THOC2 PROJECT TO THE MINISTER OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT AND FOOD OF GREECE

On 6 July 2021, the Minister of Rural Development and Food of Greece, Mr Spilios Livanos, accompanied by the Head of the Prefecture of Crete, Mr Stavros Arnaoutakis, and congressmen and stakeholders of Crete visited ELGO-DIMITRA in Chania.

During the short visit to this certified plant nursery, Georgios Koubouris, who oversees the national germplasm bank of Greece, presented the second phase of the True Healthy Olive Cultivars project (THOC2), the Gen4Olive project, and other activities developed by the ELGO-DIMITRA.

Two weeks later, on 21 July 2021, the two Deputy Ministers of Greece, Ms Fotini Arampatzi and Mr Ioannis Economou, also visited ELGO-DIMITRA, confirming the strong interest and support of the Greek government in the production of certified olive plants.

Greece is committed to the certification of a plant nursery in the national production of olive seedlings.

Olive variety certification is one of the priority objectives of the THOC2 project. The IOC is developing this project in collaboration with the University of Córdoba for the IOC’s network of germplasm banks, which has 23 olive collections in different countries.

The THOC2 project is a collaborative project that aims to authenticate the most representative olive varieties in the world and to put order in the confusion surrounding varietal denominations. For this purpose, the THOC2 project started from a list of 192 different varietal denominations. The resulting authenticated varieties from this list will be diagnosed for the pathogens established by the European regulations and will be maintained pathogen free in an international isolation repository, such as mother plants of nuclear rootstock, for the production of initial material, with varietal and sanitary guarantees.

This vegetal material will be available to the IOC network of germplasm banks to be used as starting vegetal material in their national certification programmes.
