EXPORT FIGURES OF OLIVE OIL IN THE EUROPEAN UNION (EU-27)

In January of the 2023/2024 crop year, the unit value index of extra-EU exports increased by +5.8% compared to the previous month. The unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €882 per 100kg (+6% compared to the previous month).

As for first estimates of the 2022/2023, extra-EU exports of olive oil reached 602 125 tonnes for an estimated value of €3.593 billion (-26.6% and +0.4% , respectively, compared to the previous crop year).

Spanish exports of olive oil reached 722 971 tonnes in the 2022/2023 crop year for an estimated value of €3.835 billion, placing it in first place followed by Italy with 299 030 tonnes and €1.9 billion ; Portugal with 178 419 tonnes and €904.9 million ; and Greece with 246 212 tonnes and €1.3 billion.

In terms of volumes by product category in the 2022/2023 crop year, 73.3% of total exports were under code 15091020 (extra virgin olive oil), followed by imports under 15091080 (Virgin olive oil) with 3%, 15099000 (Other olive oils) with 21.6%, and the remaining 2.1% under 15091010 (Virgin lampante).

In January of the 2023/2024 crop year, the unit value index of extra-EU exports stood at 276.5 (+60.8% compared to the same period previous crop year or +5.8% compared to the previous month).

Also in January of the 2023/2024 crop year, the unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €882 per 100kg (+56.5% compared to the same period previous crop year or +6% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 49 772 tonnes (-3.5% compared to the same period previous crop year or +9% compared to the previous month).

Extra-EU exports mainly went to Australia(-39.3%), Brazil(-20.9%), Canada(+28.9%), China(-17%), Japan(-25.7%), Republic of Korea(+1.2%), Russian Federation(-22.6%), United kingdom(+0.5%), United States(+16.6%), compared to the same period the previous crop year.

By country, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain are the most representative olive oil exporters from the European Union to other countries. They cover around 70% of global olive oil exports.

Spain

The IOC’s figures for Spain from January of the 2023/2024 crop year put the unit value index of exports at 314 (+56.6% compared to the same period previous crop year or +5.8% compared to the previous month).

The unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €839 per 100kg (+62.4% compared to the same period previous crop year or +6.9% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 25 489.3 tonnes (+3.6% compared to the same period previous crop year or +0.7% compared to the previous month).

Spanish exports mainly went to Australia(-46.3%), Brazil(+80.5%), Canada(+18.4%), China(-17.3%), Japan(-25.3%), Republic of Korea(-19%), Russian Federation(-22.7%), United kingdom(+10.5%), United States(+32.1%), compared to the same period the previous crop year.

The unit value of intra-EU exports stood at €771 per 100kg (+63.2% compared to the same period previous crop year or +6.5% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 42 850 tonnes (+37.3% compared to the same period previous crop year or +29.3% compared to the previous month).

Italy

The IOC’s figures for Italy from January of the 2023/2024 crop year put the unit value index at 266.8 (+67.1% compared to the same period previous crop year or +3.9% compared to the previous month).

The unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €926 per 100kg (+52.6% compared to the same period previous crop year or +3.6% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 16 435.5 tonnes (+9% compared to the same period previous crop year or +10.1% compared to the previous month).

Extra-EU exports mainly went to Australia(+15%), Brazil(-31.7%), Canada(+35.5%), China(-23.4%), Japan(-25.1%), Republic of Korea(+109.5%), Russian Federation(+28%), United kingdom(+8.7%), United States(+16.1%), compared to the same period the previous crop year.

The unit value of intra-EU exports stood at €464 per 100kg (-16.5% compared to the same period previous crop year or -48.5% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 7 436.2 tonnes (-10.4% compared to the same period previous crop year or +5.6% compared to the previous month).

Greece

The IOC’s figures for Greece from January of the 2023/2024 crop year put unit value index of exports at 339.2 (+98.8% compared to the same period previous crop year or +9.4% compared to the previous month).

the unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €902 per 100kg (+51.4% compared to the same period previous crop year or +6.3% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 1 320.5 tonnes (-35.7% compared to the same period previous crop year or -7.8% compared to the previous month). The volume exported to United States was -43.1% compared to the same period the previous crop year.

The unit value of intra-EU exports stood at €853 per 100kg (+69.2% compared to the same period previous crop year or +11.5% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 9 075.6 tonnes (-74.2% compared to the same period previous crop year or +89.7% compared to the previous month).

Portugal

The IOC’s figures for Portugal from January of the 2023/2024 crop year put the unit value index of exports at 244.2 (+28.7% compared to the same period previous crop year or +4.8% compared to the previous month).

The unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €973 per 100kg (+56.8% compared to the same period previous crop year or +6.7% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 5 537.4 tonnes (-34.5% compared to the same period previous crop year or +73% compared to the previous month). The volume exported to Brazil was -34.1% compared to the same period the previous crop year.

The unit value of intra-EU exports stood at €600 per 100kg (+45.3% compared to the same period previous crop year or -6% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 16 277.8 tonnes (+79.3% compared to the same period previous crop year or -33.8% compared to the previous month).
