EXPORT FIGURES OF OLIVE OIL IN THE EUROPEAN UNION (EU-27)

In February of the 2022/2023 crop year, the unit value index of extra-EU exports increased by +4.6% compared to the previous month. The unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €588 per 100kg (+4.4% compared to the previous month).

As for first estimates of the 2021/2022, extra-EU exports of olive oil reached 819 973 tonnes for an estimated value of €3.578 billion (+2% and +25.3% , respectively, compared to the previous crop year).

Spanish exports of olive oil reached 1 068 029 tonnes in the 2021/2022 crop year for an estimated value of €3.905 billion, placing it in first place followed by Italy with 357 832 tonnes and €1.711 billion ; Portugal with 253 735 tonnes and €893.7 million ; and Greece with 137 180 tonnes and €571.9 million.

On the other hand, intra-EU exports reached 1 038 404 tonnes for an estimated value of €3.708 billion (-2% and +18.3%, respectively, compared to the previous crop year).

In terms of volumes by product category in the 2021/2022 crop year, 71.3% of total exports were under code 15091020 (extra virgin olive oil), followed by imports under 15091080 (Virgin olive oil) with 3.1%, 15099000 (Other olive oils) with 22.1%, and the remaining 3.5% under 15091010 (Virgin lampante).

In February of the 2022/2023 crop year, the unit value index of extra-EU exports stood at 160.3 (+37.7% compared to the same period previous crop year or +4.6% compared to the previous month).

Also in February of the 2022/2023 crop year, the unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €588 per 100kg (+40% compared to the same period previous crop year or +4.4% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 47 311.5 tonnes (-28.8% compared to the same period previous crop year or -8.3% compared to the previous month).

Extra-EU exports mainly went to Australia(-47.5%), Brazil(+5.5%), Canada(-73.8%), China(-45.6%), Japan(-30.3%), Republic of Korea(-68.5%), Russian Federation(-21.5%), United kingdom(-21.5%), United States(-26%), compared to the same period the previous crop year.

By country, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain are the most representative olive oil exporters from the European Union to other countries. They cover around 70% of global olive oil exports.

Spain

The IOC’s figures for Spain from February of the 2022/2023 crop year put the unit value index of exports at 181.1 (+45.2% compared to the same period previous crop year or +4.9% compared to the previous month).

The unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €539 per 100kg (+40.3% compared to the same period previous crop year or +4.4% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 23 106.3 tonnes (-39.5% compared to the same period previous crop year or -6.1% compared to the previous month).

Spanish exports mainly went to Australia(-54.1%), Brazil(-36.1%), Canada(-78.8%), China(-46.8%), Japan(-37.4%), Republic of Korea(-81.5%), Russian Federation(-34.5%), United kingdom(-19.5%), United States(-41.3%), compared to the same period the previous crop year.

The unit value of intra-EU exports stood at €486 per 100kg (+48.9% compared to the same period previous crop year or +3.4% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 23 523.8 tonnes (-55% compared to the same period previous crop year or -22.4% compared to the previous month).

Italy

The IOC’s figures for Italy from February of the 2022/2023 crop year put the unit value index at 154.2 (+35.3% compared to the same period previous crop year or +6% compared to the previous month).

The unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €648 per 100kg (+36% compared to the same period previous crop year or +6.8% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 14 408.5 tonnes (-23.5% compared to the same period previous crop year or -4.5% compared to the previous month).

Extra-EU exports mainly went to Australia(-13.1%), Brazil(-8.1%), Canada(-73.4%), China(-38.6%), Japan(-12.9%), Republic of Korea(+25.4%), Russian Federation(-55.6%), United kingdom(-29.9%), United States(-7.7%), compared to the same period the previous crop year.

The unit value of intra-EU exports stood at €585 per 100kg (+30.1% compared to the same period previous crop year or +5.3% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 9 171.7 tonnes (-1.9% compared to the same period previous crop year or +10.6% compared to the previous month).

Greece

The IOC’s figures for Greece from February of the 2022/2023 crop year put unit value index of exports at 159.6 (+29.3% compared to the same period previous crop year or +2.2% compared to the previous month).

the unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €595 per 100kg (+25.6% compared to the same period previous crop year or +0% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 2 246.6 tonnes (-4.8% compared to the same period previous crop year or +9.4% compared to the previous month). The volume exported to United States was +46.6% compared to the same period the previous crop year.

The unit value of intra-EU exports stood at €505 per 100kg (+32.3% compared to the same period previous crop year or +0.3% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 26 027.8 tonnes (+153.4% compared to the same period previous crop year or -25.9% compared to the previous month).

Portugal

The IOC’s figures for Portugal from February of the 2022/2023 crop year put the unit value index of exports at 180.7 (+73.6% compared to the same period previous crop year or +4.2% compared to the previous month).

The unit value of extra-EU exports stood at €632 per 100kg (+49.3% compared to the same period previous crop year or +1.8% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 6 219.5 tonnes (+8% compared to the same period previous crop year or -26.4% compared to the previous month). The volume exported to Brazil was +24.1% compared to the same period the previous crop year.

The unit value of intra-EU exports stood at €429 per 100kg (+34.6% compared to the same period previous crop year or +4% compared to the previous month) while the export volume stood at 7 069.4 tonnes (-53.4% compared to the same period previous crop year or -22% compared to the previous month).
